Pre-loved is basically the latest term for second-hand or vintage items. Many of you have the idea that pre-loved items are old and unappealing and therefore refuse to give it a chance. However, you’d be surprised at how many gorgeous pre-loved items there are on sale in the market! There are several reasons why you should buy pre-loved:

They are often pretty cheap as sellers are not out to make a profit, simply to clear out their wardrobes!

There are items for sale that you can’t get here simply because the seller purchased it overseas!

You could get branded goods for a fraction of the price!

You could get off-season items you absolutely adore but aren’t selling in stores anymore!

You’d be going green by recycling perfectly good clothes!

With that being said, I’m sure you are all pretty excited about getting started but don’t know where to start! There are 4 places you could get pre-loved items:

www.shoppinggazebo.blogspot.com – brand new goodies from blogshops that buyers decide to sell at a lower price for various reasons (impulse purchase, wrong size, etc.)

www.thriftbook.blogspot.com – a review site which links to all pre-loved and vintage blogshops.

Bazaars – Most bazaars have at least a couple of vintage stalls. This is great because you get to inspect the condition of the items!

Vintage stores- Try Lah’Lah’Land in SS 15 for a wide variety of vintage items!

Now that you know why and where to get pre-loved goodies, here are a few tips to buying vintage!

Do your research! Make sure you know what the original price of the item is so you can compare before making your decision.

Ask for measurements, as vintage items tend to be bigger than items made more recently.

Some vintage items may need reconstructing, take all alteration costs into account before making a purchase!

Recognize a good deal! There’s no such thing as restocking when it comes to vintage/pre-loved items!

e.g. This gorgeous lace top from www.purplepolkadotshop.blogspot.com was bought for RM 69 and is now selling for only RM 15, in perfect condition!

Vintage is the so trendy these days. So what are you waiting for? Go out there and get yourself some pro-loved goodies today!

You may not realize it but shopping, just like most human activities, have a harmful impact on our planet in many ways. Read on to understand these effects and find out what you can do about them.

1. Plastic shopping bags

I think it’s safe to assume that most readers are aware of how harmful plastic is to the environment. When you shop, your collection of plastic bags tends to build up and most of you would never consider recycling!

How do you, as a fashionistas, solve this problem? Simple enough: don’t accept plastic bags! Carry a tote or an environmental shopping bag when you’re out shopping! If you absolutely HAVE to accept a plastic bag, make sure you re-use it at least once and recycle it afterwards.

2. Wastage

A lot of shopaholics buy things on impulse and never wear them. Others wear items once or twice then chuck them aside. This is a huge waste as the earth’s natural resources do go into producing these items.

To solve this problem, think carefully before making a purchase. Make sure it is truly something you will use. This saves money and avoids wastage!

You can also re-sell your items. Find them a good home! There are several ways to do this:

Re-sell brand new items bought online at www.shoppinggazebo.blogspot.com

Set up a second hand blogshop to sell your items. Get your blogshop linked to review blogs like www.thriftbook.com and www.diaryofane-shopaholic.blogspot.com to receive more viewers.

Get a few friends together and set up a booth at a bazaar! Rental is only around RM 70 which, when split between friends, is a small price to pay!

Another option is to donate these items. Any orphanage would accept them gratefully. Alternatively, donate them to the Chic Pop bazaar where they would be re-sold and all profits will go to the Women’s Aid Organization.

Just follow these simple tips to shop in a more eco friendly manner. Believe it or not, just these simple efforts on your part contribute a lot to reducing the world’s environmental problems.

The Production Concept:

A decade ago, the comic-adapted movie Storm Riders, starring pop idols Aaron Kwok and Ekin Cheng, premiered in the summer of 1998. The movie was in theatre for 45 days and topped the box office chart for the year at HK$41,532.235. In Mainland China, the unofficial box office number hit RMB 100 million.

Today, 10 years later, computer technology has revolutionized movie production. The CGI-based movie 300 (2007) set an excellent example of how the distinction of the virtual world and reality became blurred. In addition to an outstanding plot, the movie was a pleasure to the eye by bringing the ancient world to screen through extensive use of CGI. Its success transforms into the basic production concept of The Storm Warriors.

After careful reviewing and short-listing of many stories created by Hong Kong writers, we selected The Storm Warriors. Not only are they the top-selling comics in the past decade, it also deeply touches readers through its dainty artwork and vivid portrayal of love, hatred and martial arts. These are always the most desirable elements of the martial arts world. The Stormriders comics have it all.

The Storm Warriors will be directed by the reputable CGI-savvy directors the Pang Brothers, choreographed by veteran action director Ma Yuk-sing, who partner up with award-winning art and costume director Yee Chung-man. The original story in the comics will form the backbone of the movie, while reality will be blended with the virtual world in harmony. The movie will be the center of attention in 2009, and will lead the production of martial arts movie into a new era.

It’s Distinctive:

The movie will be produced extensively on blue screen and custom-made sets. Design is based on traditional Chinese settings and costumes in the original comics. CGI will be handled by the award-winning production team of the Recycle.

The Production Objective:

To blend local subculture, CGI, martial arts and visual language into a brand new world of wu-hia, and to advance Hong Kong movie production to the next generation.

The Story:

Japanese evil warlord Lord Godless desired to conquer China. He imprisoned a large number of martial artists and tried to make them subjugate. Among the prisoners were Cloud and the martial arts elder statesman Nameless. Wind came to the rescue. The trio was badly wounded by Lord Godless’s evil martial arts attack. Chu Chu was also knocked out when she blocked Cloud from Lord Godless’s strike. The remaining martial artists sacrificed their lives to save the trio, in the hope that the trio would beat Lord Godless one day and save the country.

Chu Chu was badly wounded and stayed unconscious. Cloud was filled with remorse and vowed to take revenge. Wind chose to take the evil way to quickly boost up his martial arts skills, so that he could protect the people. During his training, he met the girl who changed his life, Dream. Meanwhile, the troop of Lord Godless came to attack. Wind’s training was interrupted when he tried to save Dream from Lord Godless’s assault. After some killings, Wind ran away and disappeared….

Lord Godless took The Emperor in captivity and stationed his troops in Heaven Cave. Cloud arrived alone and started a combat with Lord Godless. Lord Godless had the upper hand. In the meantime, the half-evil Wind appeared and joined the battle. During the fight, they inadvertently discovered the secret of the sovereign. The real intention of Lord Godless’s invasion was related to an ancient tomb, a forbidden ground buried with the Royal family’s secret. The truth was finally revealed. At last, how would the battle end? Who would eventually rule over the country?

Characters:

WIND – played by EKIN CHENG Kindhearted and kept his promises seriously.
CHU CHU – played by TIFFANY T The daughter of “Kirin Arm” who accompanied Cloud in his nomadic journey. They developed tacit understanding between each other, but the relationship still lacks some romance. During the battle between Cloud and Lord Godless, Chu Chu saved her beloved from a fatal strike and passed out…

LORD WICKED – played by KENNY WONG A recluse and a renowned martial arts master who broke his two arms in order to set himself free from evil power.

There was a time when the bustier cut was used only for lingerie and sexy slips. Luckily for us, this gorgeous, flattering cut has been altered to create beautiful pieces that are perfectly decent even outside the bedroom! The trend of the month for this November is the bustier-cut, so showgirl sexy eh?

This gorgeous cut, when paired with a sexy lace material, makes the sweetest little dress. I absolutely adore this Topshop inspired bustier dress from www.velvet-ribbon.blogspot.com! This dress is classy and has a Victorian feel to it. Lace is totally in fashion now too so a lace bustier dress is an absolutely beautiful combination of 2 of the latest trends!

Another trendy combination would be the bustier cut with floral prints! This combination would give you a vintage, Katy Perry sort of look. Something as cute as this you would be able to wear on dates, fun days out and even to college when paired with a modest cardi. Check out this gorgeous floral bustier from www.clothesbucket.blogspot.com, it’s sexy, cute and pretty all at the same time! Don’t you simply adore the color?

Then there are bustier cuts paired with denim. Denim has always been associated with a sloppy fuss-free farm girl image. However, a denim bustier dress is a whole other story! They give you a carefree, youthful sort of look. Comfortable and appropriate yet super feminine at the same time!

Aside from dresses, the bustier cut used on tops is also a stroke of genius on the part of manufacturers! This super sweet top from www.uglyducklingcloset.com is just too cute! Evidently, the bustier cut looks good even in bright colors! This chiffon beauty is suitable for all occasions! Pair it with shorts for a day outing, a pair of slacks for dinner or skinnies for clubbing! Perfect!

Closer to the origin of the bustier cut, corset tops are another part of this trend that is now hotter than ever. Corset tops are now made in a way that retains their sexiness but are totally suitable to wear out. They can be worn with a cardigan during the day and without for clubbing! Check out this sexy black satin one from www.rob-my-closet.blogspot.com! I absolutely adore corset tops, don’t you?
This month’s trend, the bustier cut is totally flattering for both curvy chicks as well as slimmer ones. They emphasize your curves and give you a more feminine look. With so many different variations of bustier pieces, how could we not love this trend to bits?

Bored of the same music that has been playing in airwaves and music channels over and over again? Tired of melodious song that makes you drool? Well, an alternative rock band from the Philippines will make your day different and rocking! Whom am I talking about? It is no other than the band, Kamikazee.

Kamikazee’s songs had been featured for some time and knowing the members of the band and their newest album, Long Time Noisy will make us appreciate and fancy the music they are producing.

Kamikazee journey in Philippine music all started when the members met during their college days. Jay Contreras (lead vocalist), Jomal Linao (guitars/back-up vocals), Led Zeppelin Tuyay (guitars), Jason “Puto” Astete (bass) and Allan “Bords” Burdeos (drums) were all taking up Fine Arts in one of the Philippines prominent institution, the University of the Philippines. The band’s first choice of name is Kamikazee Cornflakes but they wanted to be easily remembered so they shortened their label to Kamikazee. The band’s name defines their philosophy which is pure passion and fearless music! The band’s premier album was self-titled and was released in 2002. Narda is so far the most notable single from the band which came from their sophomore album titled, Maharot (Unladylike) in 2006. It took three years for the Kamikazee to exculpate their fresh album, Long Time Noisy. With this album, you will find music that ranges from heartbreaking, to fun and light prankster music. Each word from the lyrics of their songs expresses rare creativity and unique wit and so ready yourself to be exhausted, exhilarated and be rock with Kamikazee’s Long Time Noisy.

Have you ever found yourself craving for a piece of story? Meron Akong Anich (I have…) is a tune that definitely for you. It is an original single from Francis Magalona, the late Philippine rapper. Kamikazee remake the song together with Chito Miranda of Parokya ni Edgar, another explosive rock band and Ian Tayao. The music became more catchy and louder with Kamikazee. Here it is…

If you have a tale and you wanted to share it with somebody who is not with you, you can use your cellular phone to spread it. Kamikazee’s Me na Me (Me of course Me!) is a song that the band shared with a cell phone commercial. The tune was used in a commercial to make it more saleable to the cell phone users and the good news was it became mobile purchasers’ favorite music! The video was simultaneous taken from Filipinos from Metro Manila, the country’s capital and Cebu.

You have news to your friend and you already told him that it is about a lady whom you find very hot. Kamikazee’s sound track, Hot Mami is a tune for you. In the Philippines, the title of the song has two connotations. If you hear the title, the first thing that will pop in your mind is a hot noodle because in the Philippines noodles are somehow called mami. However, the band song is about a hot woman one cannot resist. If you have found a hot girl well share this song with your friend!

</object

After listening to the music, you fell deeply in love with the hot woman with whom you got to sustain. You want to become closer to her however before you start your move, the lady desist you. Want to know why? Simply, the woman is not into you and the only thing she can offer is mere friendship. Hanggan Tingin (Until Look Only) is a song for you whose heart is always broken. You think the single is a melancholy? Well your mind will change as soon as you watch the video which is in 1980’s classic theme.

Don’t lose hope, if your heart has been eradicated. Remember that somewhere out there, some one is waiting for you. If you have found that woman who is unique and you experience all the good things in first time, Unang Tikim (First Taste) is the most suitable song for you.

Have you ever felt like you are in heaven when you are with the one who make your heartbeat faster and faster in a second? If you have then listen and be mesmerize with 4:20. It is one of the songs from Long Time Noisy that you will totally love. 4:20 is the time when the guy met the girl and only at that time, he encounters heaven. Here comes the video of the heavenly piece, 4:20…

Ikaw (You) is the first track from the album. This piece simply describes an undying love of a man to a woman. Here is the music video that was taken from a huge crowd of Kamikazee’s adherent.

Alay (Offering) is one of Kamikazee’s not hard core songs. It is a romantic music of a man to his special someone. It is the man’s offering and the piece is coming straight from the guy’s heart. Listen to the lyrics and you will cherish it.

Kamikazee absolutely don’t like their zealot to transgress their third album and so they wrote M.M.K -Maalala Mo Kame (You Will Remember Us). M.M.K is a song about a couple with whom the world will educe forever. Let us be entertained to M.M.K and elicit Kamikazee perpetually…

The indie scene is getting more abuzz. We’ve just mentioned about Ramly At War, and now there is Karaoke, a full length feature film by Chris CHONG.

Judging by his resume, Chris sure has set his ambitions high. Firstly, Chris is a recipient for the Asian Scholarship Foundation (Ford Foundation), and in 2006, he was invited to Pusan’s Asian Film Academy.

And though somewhat a newcomer, Chris has been making waves. His previous works has been winning prizes overseas: his experimental work Block B won the top short film prize at Argentina’s 2008 Mar del Plata Film Festival and the 2008 Toronto International Film Festival for the second year in a row (2007’s Kolam also picked up the same prize in Toronto). Block B has also been invited to the International Film Festival Rotterdam’s Tiger competition and the Berlin Film Festival in 2009.

And then comes Karaoke, which has been selected to the 2009 CANNES’ DIRECTORS FORTNIGHT. Well, with such a resume, his new movie sure is worth checking out for.

SYNOPSIS

In a rural Malaysian oil palm estate, Betik returns home from the big city of Kuala Lumpur. Betik looks to turn his life around and build a future back home with his mother after the death of his father a few years ago. Betik’s absence from the funeral is seen by his mother as a silent betrayal.

To regain his rhythm of living back home, he takes on a day job shooting karaoke videos. At night, he tries to help his mother at the family’s karaoke bar downstairs – a karaoke where the local Indian estate workers, their families, and the Malay Muslim villagers next door gather and sing.

Each song resonates for someone in the villages. And it is here that Betik meets a girl who seduces him with a future that he has come back for. A job, love and a family. His return home comes together quickly. But nobody is as naïve as they seem. Everybody wants something.

In the innocence of a small village in the estate, subtle manipulations and deceptions seep through. The songs continue to be sung, unwavering. The home has changed. The palm trees have grown in endless symmetry. The landscape rusts and nostalgia turns.

Synopsis:

DISNEY’S A CHRISTMAS CAROL, a multi-sensory thrill ride re-envisioned by Academy Award®-winning filmmaker Robert Zemeckis, captures the fantastical essence of the classic Dickens tale in a groundbreaking 3-D motion picture event.

Ebenezer Scrooge (JIM CARREY) begins the Christmas holiday with his usual miserly contempt, barking at his faithful clerk (GARY OLDMAN) and his cheery nephew (COLIN FIRTH). Scrooge makes it clear that he has no intention of enjoying the holiday and, as always, goes home—alone—where he encounters the ghost of his dead business partner Joseph Marley. Marley, who’s paying the price in the afterlife for his own callousness, hopes to help Scrooge avoid a similar fate and tells him that he will be visited by three spirits. But when the ghosts of Christmas Past, Present and Yet to Come take Old Scrooge on an eye-opening journey revealing truths he’s reluctant to face, he must open his heart to undo years of ill will before it’s too late.

Movie Review:

Think the phrase Chrismtas Carol and one thinks of a merry & cheerful scene. Well, in most cases it is. But not this movie.

Over here, bad old Scrooge faces 3 ghosts who brings him from past to present & future – to see how mean he is. This brings the movie to a very dark side, which one wonders if it is meant for this joyous season or more for Halloween.

The whole animation feels eerie & at points scary, having the whole dark feel to it. Even the ‘nicest’ ghost of all – the Present Ghost is more scary than say joyous, something which of course Scrooge deserves. But the audience?

Of course, one will argue this is after all based on a book and have been followed closely to it – afterall ghosts are meant to be scary. Well the good point, this is where the film scores… that plus of course Jim Carrey’s voice over, which shows what a brilliant actor he is.

But then again, we have the near-real-like cartoon characters – well it can be nice but honestly, when we watch animation, do we really want to watch something quite real? Wouldn’t it be better if it was acted instead? The more elastic face of Jim might have been much better actually…

Conclusion & Ratings:

6/10 – even as dark as it is, it still has the final Disney touch in the end & a good message. More importantly, if you know beforehand that it is not a merry movie, it won’t hurt that bad.

Notes:

Jim Carrey tackles seven roles, including Ebenezer Scrooge and the ghosts of Christmas Past, Present and Yet to Come.

The Dickens novella was first published on December 19, 1843, becoming an instant – and enduring — success.

Fun Facts:

Except for Colin Firth (Fred), Fionnula Flanagan (Mrs. Dilber), Leslie Manville (Mrs. Cratchit) and Leslie Zemeckis (Fred’s wife), everyone played multiple roles.

Jim Carrey: 7 roles

Old Scrooge, plus younger versions

Ghost of Christmas Past

Ghost of Christmas Present

Ghost of Christmas Yet to Come

Gary Oldman: 3 roles

Bob Cratchit

Marley’s Ghost

Tiny Tim

Bob Hoskins: 2 roles

Old Fezziwig

Old Joe

Robin Wright Penn: 2 roles

Belle

Fan

For his characters, Jim Carrey used different accents.

As Scrooge the child, teen, young adult – he begins more relaxed and loose and gets more pompous and resolute as he gets older.

Elder Scrooge – the Queen’s English, with a middle tone

Ghost of Christmas Past – An Irish accent, very light in tone

Ghost of Christmas present – a Yorkshire accent, strong and dependable working class sound, deep in register

Ghost of Christmas Yet to Come – does not speak

Bob Hoskins roughed up his own accent

Gary Oldman also played with his accent:

For Bob Cratchit he used a “London” accent, very close to his own

For Tiny Tim lightened the tone and made it higher

For Marley he used the Queen’s English

Cast member Cary Elwes is actually related to the man believed to be the inspiration for Scrooge. “John Megid Elwes is an ancestor of mine who was a renowned miser,” says Elwes. “He was a politician who changed his name from Megid to Elwes in order to gain favor with his uncle, Sir Harvey Elwes, who he knew was going to die without an heir and he had tons of money. And it worked. He managed to get all Mr. Harvey Elwes’s estates and proceeded to become one of the most famous misers in English history. He was renowned for never changing his clothes.”

When Gary Oldman played Tiny Tim, they physically lowered the floor area over which he walked so that he would appear shorter, like a child

Jim Carrey worked closely with stunt coordinator Garrett Warren and did many of his own stunts, including sliding down virtual rooftops, flying over virtual chimney stacks, sliding on a virtual icicle and falling down virtual stairs. For one of the ghost roles, Carrey was also rigged to fly.

There were six young actors ranging in age from 7–16. Together these six actors played 24 roles.

The dancers rehearsed for five weeks with a full company of 26 dancers the first week and then a “filming” company of 14 dancers for the next four weeks.

There was no costume designer. Vintage Victorian costumes were shipped from England and placed on mannequins that were kept in the conference room throughout prep and production. These were used for reference and inspiration for costume design and filmmakers created them in the computer with production designer Doug Chiang at the helm.

Cast: Jim Carrey, Gary Oldman, Colin Firth, Bob Hoskins, Robin Wright Penn, Cary Elwes, Fionnula Flanagan

Director: Robert Zemeckis

Producers: Steve Starkey, Robert Zemeckis, Jack Rapke

Screenplay by: Robert Zemeckis

Based on the classic novella by: Charles Dickens

Malaysia has seen its fair share of webisodes from Gua’s Karena Kerena to 15 Malaysia. Even we here on Bookmarqc has The BIG Bibik & The Little Nyonyas Cookshow.

And next comes, Ramly At War, a Malaysian production by Juliane Block – a European director based in the country. Her love for Asian cinema have compelled her be based on this part of the world, producing films on all things related to Asia.

Just like Ramly At War, where she uses fighting as the main draw for this short movie. In fact, the whole short film has the HK feel to it – with main dialogue in Cantonese and very dark underground HK scenes similar to that of the typical HK cop action movies.

However there is still that touch of Malaysia in its Manglish dialogue and the scene of Malaysia’s all time favourite burger – the Ramly burger, which seems to loosely link to the movie (one would have thought more since it’s title has the word Ramly anyway).

Overall, this short film still gives a powerful punch especially with the thought that this is afterall quite an independent project.

Though completed a few months back, it is now ready to be premiered online. So, sit back & get your popcorns if you need!

Synopsis:

Quan is a loyal and traditional soldier who will die by the rules. When Ming is in trouble with the rival gang, CoD (Children of DamnedNation or Cash on Delivery), Quan has to make a decision – completing his mission for the Waja Warriors, or breaking the gang laws to save his brother.
