Let’s face it, most of us know that any adaptation – whether from manga to a live action movie or a visual novel to an anime series face the risk of being bad. 11 Eyes, which is a visual novel/ game reworked into an anime series, is perhaps one of the better adaptations around.

This 12-episode series, which is loosely-based on the graphic novel of the same name, chronicles the lives of six high school students who come together to battle six sinister shadows.

The story revolves around Satsuki Kakeru, a young man who has lost his sister five years ago. With the help of his childhood friend Minase Yuka and some friends at school, Satsuki manages to put the tragic event behind to live a somewhat normal life.

Well, that doesn’t last for long because one day, a very curious thing happens: the sky turns red, the moon turns black, everyone else disappears and monsters start to roam the streets! But before you can say “Eye of Aeon” things return to normal.

Just when Satsuki thought that the strange occurrence was a dream, the Red Night occurs again. This time, he manages to find four more individuals who are experiencing the mysterious phenomenon. They are Kusakabe Misuzu, a red-haired onmyouji swordswoman; Tachibana Kukuri, a mute who looks uncannily like the protagonist’s deceased sister; Hirohara Yukiko, a lively young girl who becomes a cold-blooded killer when her glasses are removed and Tajima Takahisa, a young pyrokineticist.

Together, they try to survive the Red Night but things become complicated when suddenly, six shadows appear before them….

One might think that this is similar to the Persona series but this story has more depth and a much better good versus evil plot. The series starts out strong because the character development is engaging and interesting, however not all of the main characters are well developed, which is rather disappointing. Nonetheless, the various plot twists keeps the story’s momentum going.

The sad thing about 11 Eyes is that it weakens toward the end despite its excellent denouement. The story meanders and becomes convoluted.

The artwork here is beautiful but the battle scenes are not as exciting as they could be…yet when compared to other series of the same genre, 11 Eyes is still more entertaining.

The soundtrack is perfect for the series as it sets the right mood for the different scenes. The dark themes are peppered with some old school Japanese influence. The combination of modern and old school music is appropriate.

Ayane’s Arrival of Tears is the opening theme while Arisel’s Kegare Naki Yumi is heard when the end credits start to roll. If you haven’t heard these tracks before, I strongly encourage you to get them for they are wonderful.

All said, the series is enjoyable but too bad about the ending, though. 11 Eyes has potential because it has a fantastic premise yet the writers messed things up towards the end. Watch this only when there’s nothing better lying around the house.

Ratings: 4 out of 5

The story is excellently told, and there’s good execution of movement and visually pleasing artwork aplenty for readers to enjoy. However, the characters are pretty static for some of the more expressive elements of the story, and sometimes you get the feeling that the artwork is wasted on non-important sequences.

Chicken dish is in the not-to-be-missed dish in Chinese New Year food especially during Chinese New Year reunion dinner. Traditionally, this chicken dish will use a whole chicken including head and claws – cooked and offered to “god” before being cut to smaller pieces to be eaten. This Chinese New Year chicken dish taste so good you must have thought the recipe is somewhat complicated. Wrong! This chicken dish is very easy!

Looking at this chicken dish recipe, ingredients needed are basically just a kampong chicken, salt and water! The kampong chicken will be boiled in a pot of water (yes, just plain water) and hauled up when cooked. When it cooled down, coat it with salt. If you’re using this chicken dish as offerings, go ahead. If not, wait for about 15 minutes before you cut it to smaller portions to be eaten. So that the chicken would have absorbed a bit of the salty taste. It is normal to serve the chicken dish cold.

What’s better still, the pot of water used to boil the chicken can be kept in freezer whole year long to be used as if chicken stock. Use it for your noodle dishes or soup (in replacement of plain water). It is almost tasteless but with the essence and fragrance of chicken! Pack it into few small portions with containers or waterproof packets for use at different occasion.

The only thing concerned in preparation would be equipment. You need to have a pot big enough for whole chicken and figure out how you’re going to haul up the whole chicken later without poking too many holes on it! Lol! Don’t worry, its easy if you have a large thong. I sometimes use hands (in gloves and when it cooled down) but also seen people hauling it up with just chopsticks, one poked into the chicken’s neck part and another in the buttock. If you’re not going to serve it as offerings, go ahead and buy cut chicken. You’ll have no problem with equipment.

I’ve almost got the whole chicken recipe revealed already but let’s look in detail:-

Chicken Dish for Chinese New Year

Ingredients:

1 pot of water (enough to submerge the whole chicken + 3 inches more in height to prepare for evaporation)

1 whole kampong chicken (cleaned)

2 tbsp of salt (coarse salt preferably but fine salt will be ok too)

Preparation:

Boil the water and plunge in the chicken.

Keep boiling until cooked (about 20 minutes, test it by poking a knife into the flesh – flesh should be softer when cooked. If you’re not sure, note that Chinese food is rather overcooked than undercooked)

Haul up the chicken.

Set aside to let cool. Then coat the outside of the chicken with your hands. Leave it for another 15 minutes.

Ready to serve.

Now, let’s say that BLACK RANSOM is one hell of a Hong Kong police flick. It’s all about the GOOD (cops), the BAD (kidnappers) and the UGLY (triad gangs). When we diligently mix these three elements, we get a story on bloody mayhem.

BLACK RANSOM is one stylish film directed by KEUNG KWOK-MAN with a lot of heart, some soul and plenty of shoot-outs. It focuses on kidnap and ransom, though strangely, the victim is not the heir to some billionaire, but an important triad member. We’ve a good cop played by SIMON YAM.

Now throw in a bad cop (MICHAEL MIU) who’s helming a small bunch of hard-boiled ex-cops who kidnap not just for money, but to act as self-imposed vigilantes to eliminate the baddies – those who manage to escape judicial justice.

Charismatic actor SIMON YAM leads a great cast in the role of a middle-aged cop and doting father, whose life takes on a sense of forlorn loneliness, after his wife was killed in a car accident and that he has now to fend for his teenage daughter.

‘Tis the season of Hong Kong TV land thespians crossing over to the big screen.

Ex-TVB actor SIMON YAM pitches acting skills with current TVB artistes MICHALE MIU and FALA CHAN, proving that there’s life after the TVB banner. fter all, A-listers CHOW YUN FAT and TONY LEUNG rose to fame from acting in TVB dramas, in the long years before.

In BLACK RANSOM, we find a sombre theme about the violent life that brings the cops and robbers together, and the end result that takes a toll on both. The tension is excruciating when the heat comes down on the hoods. he cat-and-mouse challenges between the cops, robbers and triad gangs are fast-paced and clever.

It’s one of the few absorbing Hong Kong police flicks to come out in the flurry of police thrillers in recent years. For pure entertainment value and to let your hair down, go watch BLACK RANSOM. Some scenes may be brutal but you will get this sense of reality that will not seem contrived.

And oh yeah, all the actresses in the film are gorgeously stunning.

Chinese New Year is coming soon and the town is already filled with the red “hoo-hah”! Other than spring cleaning and planning for trips, what most Chinese are concerned of is of course, Chinese New Year FOOD! During this season, Chinese are particularly concerned of auspicious thingy. Therefore food displayed, served or consumed are often symbolic – representing good fortune, prosperity, wealth, longevity and good health. Some are labelled with Chinese character “fa” (prosper) or “fu” (blessing).

The day before the first of Lunar New Year is an important day for family reunion. Sumptuous dinner with chicken and fish (not to be missed Chinese New Year food), will be served. Chicken must be in whole with head and claws. Whole symbolises “complete” where each and every family member will be around. Fish in Chinese is pronounced “yu” which also means “surpluses”. There must be fish every year to signify there will be surpluses every year. For the same reason, the dishes shall not be consumed to the last bite! Interesting, huh?

Where noodles are served, the noodles should not be cut – long noodles to signify longevity. Chinese New Year cake (nian gao) is another Chinese New Year to be present for this occasion. Chinese New Year cake is “sticky” and thereby signify family bond. Other filling Chinese New Year foods also served are carrot cake and yam cake.

Mandarin Oranges

It is a Chinese tradition to visit relatives and friends during Chinese New Year. So they will prepare food to be served to visitors as well! The common ones are mandarin oranges (kum), melon seeds (kuaci), Chinese cookies (ngaku), pineapple tarts, egg folds (kueh kapit), dried meats (rou gan) and many more. A traditional Chinese New Year snack is Chinese candy served in Chinese candy box called “ba bao” (directly translated as Eight Treasures). Traditionally, there should be 8 compartments in a round box often red and black in colour due to its material being lacquerware. Nowadays, there are many designs available and often made of plastic or melamine. The traditional Chinese New Year food served in this candy box are sugared stuffs such as sugared coconut, sugared lotus root, sugared lotus seeds and also some other snacks like melon seeds.

Chinese New Year Candy Box

Another interesting Chinese New Year food is raw fish salad (yu sheng). It is a salad made of raw strips of fish with julienned carrot, radish, sweet turnip and colourful crisps. Salad dressing is a special sauce with sesame and sometimes grounded nuts. Everyone will gather in a round table to toss the salad together while yelling “Lou ah! Lou ah! Yuet lou yuet sang” and making their own wishes for wealth and prosperity! It is something fun to do!

Although the celebration lasts until the 30th day of Lunar New Year, the mood often fades on the 15th day of Lunar New Year. On this day we call Chap Goh Mei, the Chinese especially Hokkien community will serve glutinous rice balls (tang yuan). By this time, everyone would have resumed to work and the holiday is over…

Sweet Glutinous Rice Ball

While you remember the holidays, don’t forget to wish everyone Gong Xi Fa Cai ok? And stay tuned for Chinese New Year food recipes

So today, I’ve decided to mix up three completely different genres into one review, carefully picking the comics so that they won’t clash among their personalities – yet at the same time making sure that they’re a great read for someone looking to browse through them one after the other.

Language: Bahasa Malaysia
Publisher: Art Square Creation Sdn. Bhd.
Cartoonist: Chiba Kozue
Category : Shoujo

The first book, Rashia Waktu Ketujuh, consists of three individual love stories. It revolves around the high school lives of three high school girls, the men they meet in their lives, and how they deal with the challenges of love. Chiba Kozue, the author, obviously has a great imagination, as the love stories don’t come out of cliché plots like some shoujo titles.

The first story tells of young Shun, a new transfer student who finds it hard to mix among her new classmates. As a result of that, she puts on a mask of happiness, and quickly becomes the class joker, earning the reputation of Miss Sunshine. Despite being tired of acting, she feels that she hasn’t got a choice in it and decides to press on for the sake of her friends.

But when a childish, cute looking male teacher starts teaching their class, things start changing for Shun. She finds herself becoming more and more vulnerable around him, and slowly finds herself developing feelings for him – and realizes that he reciprocates in kind. But what happens, just as she finds someone she can really trust, when the rest of the school rejects their student-teacher relationship?

The second story revolves around Eri, a young girl who has a childhood friend who is a guy, Kaoru. Now, Kaoru is at first glance a shy guy, so Eri take sit upon herself to be his “big sister”, always protecting him wherever he goes. What she doesn’t realize, though, is that Kaoru has been hiding his persona of being a “playboy” in school, and isn’t at all who Eri thinks he is.

One day, Eri stumbles upon Kaoru while he is mingling with some of the other girls. She is shell shocked at his real behavior, and finds it hard to grasp that the real Kaoru is so different from what she has perceived. And when Kaoru starts using his charms on her, Eri finds herself falling for him. What is she to do?

The third story is about Ookubo, who feels that she has made the biggest mistake of her life by openly declaring her feelings to Rio, the class popular; only to be turned down in front of everyone. After that, she swears of getting near to Rio and all men in general, for fear of being hurt again. However, circumstances begin to put Rio constantly near her, and her feelings evoke within her a sense of insecurity again – plus, it seems that this time, Rio has feelings for her too. Should she learn from her mistakes and protect herself? Or should she take another chance for happiness?

Language: Bahasa Malaysia
Publisher: Art Square Creation Sdn. Bhd.
Cartoonist: Kim Yeon-Joo
Category : Shoujo

Nabi Prototaip is a rather contemporary story, in that the plot is rather unique. It starts with So Ryu, who is a daughter in a family with complicated ties among its members. For political reasons, So Ryu is ordered to be kidnapped by her own father.

As luck would have it, the kidnapper who is in charge of kidnapping So Ryu turns out to be a nice guy. As the family troubles deepen, the situation forces the kidnapper and the victim closer to each other, and things start turning upside down. The environment makes their relationship even more complicated, and things come to a peak when So Ryu saves her kidnapper’s life! Can So Ryu predict the future?

Language: English
Publisher: Gala Unggul Resources Sdn. Bhd.
Cartoonist: Taufan
Category : Shonen

High Time is written by Malaysian writer Taufan, and his work is surprisingly good for what we take for granted to be “Malaysian standards”. The story revolves around Jack, a too good to be true cop, who takes down extreme mafia bosses in a fictional regional setting with his partner, Fat Cat.

The story starts with a bang, when Jack and Fat Cat chase down one of the city’s drug lords and corner him. Just as they are about to capture him, he kills himself, removing the threat of him revealing his boss’ location. Jack and Fat Cat reel from their failure, but little do they know that their adventure is only beginning.

***

Ratings:

Rashia Waktu Ketujuh: 4.1 out of 5

Nabi Prototaip: 3.6 out of 5

High Time: 4.6 out of 5

***

Rashia Waktu Ketujuh is your standard shoujo manga with a unique touch, and will be a delightful read for high school students who relate to the character’s situations. Nabi Prototaip is more of a read for those who want a fantasy setting, but overall the story is pretty attractive.

Finally, High Time is a great story which expresses the Malaysian mangaka spirit to its fullest extent. The story is told remarkably well, and incorporates the plot of the challenges of a police fighting a drug lord in a very believable setting. Truly, it is a book worth considering.

Another festive occasion approaching and before it starts, let’s get ready to cook (or eat) some fine Chinese food! Chinese food we are going to cook this time is Oyster Fat Choy with Sea Cucumber and Broccoli. The name of this Chinese dish does sound “challenging” to cook but we have a “friendly” food recipe here. And hey, this oyster dish is served in a renowned 5-star hotel, Hotel Equatorial Kuala Lumpur! Now, some effort in the kitchen is sure worth to show off a fine Chinese dish this Chinese New Year, huh?

I had wondered if “fat choy” is still available out there. Now I know it sure is! Fat choy symbolises prosperity in Chinese’s belief and an ingredient not to be missed during Chinese New Year. It can be a dish on its own too. It is often available in Chinese medical halls and supermarkets. Some mini markets operated by Chinese might stock some since Chinese New Year is near.

The rest of the ingredients, I’m sure you guys know where to get them now. Supermarkets would have them all . Oh, sea cucumber is another ingredients favoured by Chinese so you may only be able to find them in Chinese markets (pasar pagi or pasar borong). Look for the seafood section.

Get all the ingredients ready and start to prepare them. Cooking methods used for this oyster dish include blanching, boiling, simmering and steaming – all being water cooking methods. So, good news to those who hates frying . Let’s look at this 5-star Chinese food recipe:-

Oyster Fat Choy Recipe (Serves 10pax)

Ingredients:

500gm of sea cucumber (blanched and thickly sliced)

500gm of broccoli (blanched)

Preparation:

In a pot filled with 2 litres of water, add oyster sauce, ginger, spring onion, light and dark soya sauce, salt and sugar. Bring to boil.

Add the oysters and simmer for 30 minutes. Strain off the water and ingredients except oysters.

Meanwhile, combine corn flour, egg whites, chicken powder and sugar then combine with chicken meat and fat choy. Mould it into meat balls with your hands. Baste the meat balls with corn starch (corn flour + some water).

STAY BRACED to your seat in the theater. We all know whenever comes a-calling. How can we ever forget? Not with this season of prophetic cinematic offerings: ends-of-the-world, famines, tsunamis, snowstorms, killer earthquakes, natural disasters and other unspeakable destructions.

Grim questions are always screaming in our minds reminding us:

“Why won’t we be more mindful of the earth’s crust and stop brutalizing it?” “

Why didn’t we love one another more and respect cultural differences?”

“Why are we so selfish when we ignore the plight of the innocents who are being crushed, exploited, humiliated and degraded?”

to religious wars that led to mindless terrorism.

Too late! Beware the wrath of GOD. GOD has taken in so much and is now sending his legion of ANGELS to destroy the earth, wipe away MANKIND, in short: to evoke the APOCALYPSE.

This is the main setting of the story, beginning with a small motley of strangers stuck in the middle of nowhere, in a diner, in an out-of-the-way countryside. And this becomes the unlikely battleground for the survival of the human race where the ANGELS OF DEATH via destruction come a-visiting.

There’s a woman who is expecting this child, a baby whom we are led to believe is CHRIST in his second coming, who is the only glimmer of hope of stopping the massive slaugher. There is also the archangel apparent who stands between MANKIND and the APOCALYPSE.

Now, folks, don’t be too biblical if you want to enjoy this movie.

It focuses on the fallen angels versus mankind when GOD is disdainful of cruel people and their evil deeds. LEGION the movie is a part supernatural and part horror flick and not a religious picture per se, so don’t reach for your bible.

It’s a mix of the EXORCIST and the TERMINATOR, if you must. Will GOD finally cleanse this world of evil? You will be jolted out of your seat when you watch this little frail old sweet lady transforming into a bloody violent demon.

You will be treated to graphic scenes of violence, guns, sexual references and language, plus grotesque images and transformations. But you will enjoy the fast stomping action from tip to toe, heart in your mouth.

When the last angel falls, the fight for mankind begins.

Directed by SCOTT STEWART, it’s a GEM of a movie.

GO WATCH IT NOW.

Teochew Steamed Fish is slightly sour and salty therefore so appetising that it keeps you hungry throughout the meal! Teochew Steamed Fish is like a combination of Salted Vegetable with Beancurd Soup and Steamed Fish. Of course not so much of water involved, just enough to create some delicious sauce to top on steaming white rice.

A simple steamed fish the Chinese style may just have Xiao Xing wine and ginger – both being common ingredients in casting away the fishy smell of seafood dishes. Teochew Steamed Fish recipe however, is improved with additional ingredients including salted vegetable, beancurd and tomato which enhance the taste to a different kind. Pickled plums are commonly used for Teochew Steamed Fish however the Teochew Steamed Fish recipe below does not involve this ingredient. I find it tastes just nice as it is

This Teochew Steamed Fish recipe uses pomfret but it also works well with other fishes such as seabass. The advantage of using pomfret is that it is easy to handle even if you forgot to get the fish monger to help you. All that is necessary to do is to remove those thin and tiny scales and clear its tummy and gill. Normally fish monger at market would automatically do these for you or you can just ask – no extra charge. How to know if the fish is fresh? Look at the eyes – watery and transparent but may be a little bloody though. Then press the cheek to see that blood still comes out from the gill.

For those who prefer some spiciness, adding some chillies to steam the fish will satisfy your taste bud but do not overdo as chillies may cover the overall taste of this Teochew Steamed Fish if too much is added. Overall, all ingredients used in Teochew Steamed Fish recipe shared below are pretty common and easily available for sure. You sure know where to get them.

Not much seasoning required in this Teochew Steamed Fish recipe as there is enough flavours from the ingredients. Enjoy this appetising Teochew Steamed Fish!

Arrange all ingredients in a deep, metal or porcelain plate with the fish in the middle. Make sure not too much ingredients on top or underneath the fish to avoid having uncooked parts. Xiao Xing wine should be poured on the fish directly while water shall just be added to the side to prevent washing away the wine from the fish.

Takasu Ryuji, the son of a hooligan and son of a member of some illegal organization, lives a life neglected by people around him. People, including his classmates and teachers, all have the impression that he’s a hooligan, like his father, just because of his scary, sanpaku eyes. All these are all just misunderstandings and it’s true when they say to never judge a book by its cover. Though, things began to change when people started getting to know him better.

One day, a cute but aggressive young girl, Aisaka Taiga, got into a conflict with Ryuji. Nicknamed “Palmtop Tiger” for her brutal ways, she was angry and furious at Ryuji when he accidentally bumped into her. That was how their friendship began. Despite having such a bad first impression, they became quite close together and Ryuji even helps her with chores. Taiga, on the other hand, comes from a very troublesome family; she’s taken care by her stepfather because her biological father left them when they declared themselves bankrupt. She lives with her mother but has difficulties getting along with the rest of her family members. Taiga and Ryuji becomes good friends, and they can consider each other as “family”.

Minori, also known as Ryuji’s crush, has a nickname called “Minorin”. She’s best friend to Taiga and has a cheerful and happy personality. She’s a real athletic and she captains the softball team. She is a very observant young lady and is able to see Ryuji’s true nature, gentle, rather than see him as a hooligan like everyone else.

Aside from that, another character in this school adventure would be Kitamaru, Yusaka Kitamaru, who is also the best friend to Ryuji. People know him for his high post of Vice President of the Student Council, and he had a crush on the “Palmtop Tiger”. He once confessed to her during their freshmen year, but disappointingly, he was rejected. Taiga soon revealed that this was a regretful act, but it was too late. Kitamaru fell in love with the President of the Student Council instead.

Kawashima Ami is a childhood friend of Kitamaru, and soon was transferred to the same school Kitamaru was in. She is known for being innocent and air headed but this isn’t her true personality. She prefers to hide and keep her “true” personality to herself. Kitamaru knows about this and usually encourages her to be herself rather than hide herself.

There are other recurring characters like Kano Sumire. She’s the head of the student council and as mentioned above, Kitamaru admires her a lot. Sumire later left for America to pursue her dream of becoming an astronaut, but this however was a huge blow to Kitamaru. Kitamaru was emotionally hurt and for some time, and so he avoided his goal of becoming President. After awhile, Kitamaru got his senses back and realised that he was wrong to feel this way.

Ratings: 3.5 out of 5

Toradora is an endearing anime which revolves very much around the lives of the characters, but you can’t help feeling like the producers could have done much more. Every episode reveals their everyday problems, and the importance of friends. It’s mostly a romance Anime, but it’s too based on their school lives. Still, the anime is a pretty good one, and is worth a recommendation.

Arghhh….I thoroughly enjoyed CARRIERS the movie. Surprisingly. It’s a poser, a human mirror. It makes you think. It’s thought provoking. It urges you to take a walk “outside of yourself”….and assesses your exterior image.

Don’t you like what you see? Aren’t you a prick? So you don’t like yourself very much? What if you are placed in this situation:

You are a sick dog thrown in one corner and your psychotic master is brutally kicking and maiming you… Would you snarl, bite and fight back ….the animal instinct in you that demands you stay alive …to survive?

Bet you do.

Take a simple plot of survival, amid a chaotic world that is infested with the deadly viral pandemic. Throw in 2 eye candy couples. Put these anti-heroes in a car and send them on a journey of survival because the entire world is dying from a deadly, unexplainable virus assault…put on your breathing mask and along the way, trust no one, help no one.

This is the name of the game, a horrific one, if you want to stay alive because everywhere, most infected people are already dead.

CARRIERS picks up after a contagious unnamed disease has wiped out most of the world’s population.

In the hope of finding someplace isolated, four friends are making their way to Turtle Beach where two of them, brothers Brian and Danny, spent their summers growing up. They abide by a set of rules that is supposed to keep them all alive and uninfected.

But the rules aren’t perfect, trust me, especially when you break them.

The SURVIVAL RULES are simple: Mind your own business. Don’t be kind.

Pick up a stranger along the way, and you stand a good chance of confronting a possible carrier. Even when your girlfriend is infected, you best dump her out in the desert to lessen the burden. Even when your own brother is infected, you must shoot him in order that you stay alive.

This is the name of the game. Kill or shoot if you wanna live. No regrets, as it is the survival of the fittest. There, I have told you all. You won’t like yourself very much, after the show. In most of us, there’s this mean streak, applicable in all situations. I stab you, you stab me.

Is there such a word in this selfish world called REAL FRIENDS, much less DEVOTED BROTHERS when you have only one choice to stay breathing?

You live, I die. You die, I live. CHOOSE.

(Now go watch this gritty, fast-paced and brutally shocking thriller directed by ALEX and DAVID PASTOR).
