Lately, recession has forced us to tighten our purse strings and avoid splurging on fashion items. However, this does not mean we have to stop following trends! Simply find a cheaper alternative or better yet, Do It Yourself!

You will need:
– a pair of old jeans
– a ruler
– a maker pen
– a pair of scissors

Instructions:
- Find a pair of old jeans you don’t wear anymore.
- Fold the jeans in half and lay it down.
- Find a pair of shorts that are the length you want your cut-offs to be and lay it on top of your jeans.
- Ensure that the crotch of the jeans and the shorts are aligned as shown in the picture below.
- Using a ruler and a marker, draw a line an inch below your desired length. Then, cut along the line you have drawn.
- The pair of jeans I’ve used for this project is already the right color. If your jeans are not, here’s what you do:
- Bleach your shorts
- Throw the shorts into a bucket and fill the bucket with water until it is submerged. Pour in 1-2 cups of bleach then allow the shorts to soak until a desired color is achieved. Then, take them out and wash them to make sure that the bleach does not fade the color further.
- Soak your shorts in coffee – In a bucket, mix two cups of coffee grounds and enough water to turn them into liquid. Place the shorts into the bucket and allow to soak overnight.
- For frayed ends, cut along the edge with a blunt pair of scissors until the desired length is achieved. Then, go over the edges with a bread knife or steak knife.
- Finally, make “almost holes” by going over the areas with a cheese grater or sandpaper.
- And there you have it, a cute pair of distressed shorts without parting with your hard earned cash! Put on a simple top, accessorize and you’re good to go!

With this DIY project, you will be putting an old, unwanted pair of jeans to good use while adding a new fashionable piece to your wardrobe!
