When high-powered book editor Margaret (SANDRA BULLOCK) faces deportation to her native Canada, the quick-thinking exec declares that she’s actually engaged to her unsuspecting put-upon assistant Andrew (RYAN REYNOLDS), who she’s tormented for years. He agrees to participate in the charade, but with a few conditions of his own. The unlikely couple heads to Alaska to meet his quirky family (MARY STEENBURGEN, CRAIG T. NELSON, BETTY WHITE) and the always-in-control city girl finds herself in one comedic fish-out-of-water situation after another. With an impromptu wedding in the works and an immigration official on their tails, Margaret and Andrew reluctantly vow to stick to the plan despite the precarious consequences.
Throw the ever hilarious but always beautiful Sandra Bullock into a movie with Ryan Reynolds and his puppy dog eyes and you have yourself the romantic comedy of the year! This movie had just about everything a romantic comedy needs: beautiful cast, breath-taking scenery, an appropriately sweet ending and of course, large doses of humor!
While you may expect over-done jokes, the humor in this movie is surprisingly fresh! In an effort to fit into Andrew’s eccentric Alaskan family, Margaret, the uptight city girl slips and stumbles her way through the craziest situations. The trouble she gets into is so over-the-top that there is no way you could ever see it coming!
You will find yourself falling out of your seat with laughter at the most unexpected moments. This is, without a doubt, the perfect weekend movie to relax after a hard week!
Why Not Watch
The only downfall of this movie would have to be its not-so-original plot. If you were one to analyze the bigger picture, this movie would be a great disappointment to you. Starting off with a misunderstood, terrifying boss is so over-rated. I mean seriously, who here has yet to get acquainted with Miranda Priestly of the Devil Wears Prada or Wilhelmina of Ugly Betty?
As for the ending, do the writers of romantic comedies copy and paste endings off old scripts?
The Proposal may be a typical romantic comedy with a predictable story line, but it is the crazy, unpredictable humor injected at regular intervals that makes this movie one-of-a-kind! A stress-buster that won’t change your life but you wouldn’t regret watching either!
By the way….
Be sure not to rush out of the cinema as soon as the movie ends or you’ll miss the insanely hilarious snippets shown while the credits are rolling!
