From far east, we are now moving to the land of music – the Philippines. In the weeks to come, I’ll be sharing the hots from this land of talented people… starting off this week with Pinoy bands! Mabuhay!

Filipino or Pinoy bands are not left behind with the international artists. In fact, most of Pinoy bands are the front act of foreign bands coming in the country. Filipino bands are still eminent in the Philippine music scene. But other than music, I supposed the eccentric names of the band spawn them to be renowned. Let’s find out the Pinoy band with odd names but has smashing hits today.

First stop is the band named The Dawn. Dawn literally means before the sunrise. However the band, the Dawn which led by the late Teddy Diaz in 1980’s chosen the name because of the parody of a Holy Spirit that was given to him by a nun. The parody was said to be embodied the dawn of the new day. The ensemble went to many changes that led for them to disperse in 1990’s. Nevertheless in 2001 the band reunited and it was then led by Jett Pangan, the only member from the original ‘The Dawn’. The Dawn can be considered as one of the legendary rock band in the Philippines because it has already 11th studio album. The band’s latest album entitled Sound the Alarm launched last July sets a different standard of rock in the Philippines. The first single is titled Hatak (Pull) which has meaningful lyrics and erratic tune. To hear more about the song Hatak, here is the compelling music video…

Kamikaze, is a Japanese word which means the blissful wind that didn’t flutter however here in the Philippines, a band named Kamikazee has blowing rock music in the music industry since 2002. The pinoy rock band is primarily composed of five comical men who met in University of the Philippines while they are in college and since then the band ravage rock songs in the music scene. Long Time Noisy is Kamikazee’s third album which surely has entertaining singles that will shake the airwaves and music charts. Hanggang Tingin is the band’s primary single from their latest album. The song mainly discourses about an unrequited love in a witty approach. Here is the music video of Hanggang Tingin by Kamikazee and be ready to be drive like nuts for four minutes and 39 seconds.

Another Filipino rock band that always releases amusing and clever verse is non-other than Itchyworms. Itchyworms like Kamikazee institute in a university. The pinoy band is composed of four jocund guys from the Ateneo De Manila University. Why on the earth they called their band Itchy worms? Are they freaking? No their not. The reason their lead vocalist, Jugs Jugueta named their band as Itchy worms because the Beatles, Scorpions and Crickets are already utilized. One shocking truth, all of the band members has collection of insects! The guys met in 1996 but only in 2001 they have released their first album. Self-titled is Itchyworms fifth album which was released in late 2008. The band already yield three knock-out single and with their fourth single out entitled Misis Fely Nimfa ang Pangalan, Itchyworms possibly dominate the hit chart again. The song has catchy tune as well as the story. The story of their latest song is about a woman whose name is Fely Nimfa who had many husbands. The twist of the story can be seen in their preposterous video and here it is…

Hanggang sa Muli by Kenyo is another song that has captivating tune. Kenyo is a five man Pinoy band who took the center stage last 2008. The members are from Bulacan, a province from the Philippines where they got their band name. Bulakenyo are called the people from Bulacan and the band decided that their labeled their self as Kenyo to make them distinctive. Maharlika is the title of Kenyo’s second album where the track Hanggang sa Muli can be found. It is their first single which tells an emblem of love of a husband who went in a different country for his family. If you miss your love ones, here is the video you shouldn’t miss.

While Kenyo came from Bulacan, the members of Hale actually are all from the southern part of Manila. Hale is a band that creates melodious music since 2004. The band is being led by Champ Lui Pio who is beloved by most teenage girls because of his distinctive looks and voice. Hale precociously unleashes their fourth album entitled Kundiman. The Pinoy alternative band first single, Bahay Kubo from their latest album is currently dominating the chart in radio and music channels. Bahay Kubo is a song intend for lovers or even singles that yearn to feel in love. And to listen with their fresh number one song, here is Bahay Kubo by Hale.

Unfortunately not all songs are aspired for happy, romantic ending. One song that hit exactly in the heart of listeners is Kasalanan (Sin). Kasalanan is the first single from the fifth album of 6cyclemind entitled Project: 6 cyclemind. What is 6cycle mind and where it came from? 6 cycle mind is composed of five men plus their manager. They named their band because they are the one who creates, arrange and compose all of their songs which they consider as a perpetual cycle. 6 cyclemind started their venture in the music industry in 2003. Kasalanan is a collaboration of the band with rapper Gloc-9 and Wendell Garcia, a member of the band Pupil. And today with their fresh track, Kasalanan by 6 cycle mind will absolutely make one’s eyes teary and envisage their mistake.

Hiling (Wish) by Silent Sanctuary is another heart warming song for people who hope to rekindle their love with their special someone. Silent Sanctuary like 6 cyclemind has five members which were assembled in 2001. This Pinoy band is really inimitable because they are the only alternative band who accompanies cello and violin with their music. Silent Sanctuary intrudes in the Philippine music industry in 2006 with their first album Fuschiang Pag-ibig. The band second studio album, Mistaken for Granted brings Hiling. Hiling is Silent Sanctuary’s second single that moving quickly in local music chart and positively to your heart.

Truly, Filipino bands have awesome, peculiar and fascinated names. In fact, two legendary names of Filipino singers’ influence each of the Pinoy rock and alternative bands. Ely Buendia, the lead vocalist of the very prominent band Eraser head in 90’s and the late Francis Magalona, the master rapper stormed the Philippine music industry. The two singers again combined their extraordinary talent in singing with the single Higante (Big). Higante is a song for the Filipinos that being played through out airwaves and music television stations. Certainly, the song from the upcoming album entitled In Love and War tremble the music scene once more. And here is the rocking video Higante…
