Movie Review

You should have at least heard about the Mayan calendar by now with all the hype (some call it buzz) surrounding it. Well, if not – here’s the brief: the Mayan calendar is suppose to reach its 13th & last cycle on 21 December 2012. Nothing follows that.

So there are already predictions on what is to happen to the world by that date – some say, an end to the world. But haven’t we heard something similar as we crossed the millenium?

Well, whatever it is – we can take a look of a possibility of what may happen.

Directed by the same director who brought us Independence Day & The Day After Tomorrow, Roland Emmerich sticks to his usual style of an earth that is soon to be destroyed. Chaos, things going wrong at the last minute, unexpected turn of events, Mr President, and the ordinary folks turn heroes. The one major difference here – Mr President is not the usual Caucasian.

While Independence Day was a big hit in terms of introducing a good disaster blockbuster, however, using the similar approach here after over a decade doesn’t make the movie shine. Yes, you will get entertained with the big explosions and the cracking of the earth (which some of the scenes did have very good CGI) but the story is rather predictable and recycled. It would have been better if it had a more original storyline – maybe of the likes of Angels & Demons.

Ratings: 6/10 – mainly for entertainment purposes. This is after all a big budget production which will give you enough CGI to go watch. But remember, just don’t expect too much.
